Like so many aspects of the healthcare environment, strategic planning has faced many challenges as providers adjust to shifting demands. Growth is happening and it is being driven by achieving flexibility/adaptability, growing revenue and improving population health and care access. This session will evaluate changes and trends impacting organizations’ strategic planning as they adjust to these new realities as well as the rise in patient consumerism.

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the findings of the survey of Healthcare Design’s A/E/C survey.

2. Evaluate the rise of renovation vs. new construction and examine trends in size of projects and total spend.

3. Discuss the benefits and potential pitfalls of each course of action (new vs. renovate) and where each makes the most sense.

4. Describe one organization’s new build, its role as the first part of a changing strategic plan and how it will impact their facilities in the future.

Healthcare is being disrupted in many ways as we speak. From fee-for-service to value-based care models, organizations are focusing on ways to expand ambulatory assets that will retain consumers and take patient experience to the next level.

Learning Objectives:

1.        Describe what consumer obsession means in terms of healthcare design.

2.        Understand what AdventHealth is doing to push innovation in all-in-one healthcare facilities called health parks.

3.        Analyze consumer trends on what matters most in healthcare and how to design buildings based on consumer preferences.

4.        Discuss how to involve key operational stakeholders in the early stages of healthcare design

Healthcare facility design continues to evolve in new and exciting ways, much of it driven by the harsh lessons of the past few years. This session will showcase new, innovative designs that are being created to build the facilities of the future – both for acute and non-acute capital projects.

Learning Objectives:

1. Summarize the need for flexibility and technology integration in modern design and construction.

2. Explain how to integrate lessons learned and new mandates/regulations into design and construction.

3. Illustrate the value of consulting clinical staff on design needs, tips and best practices.

As sites of care continue to shift and organizations are faced with reuse, repurpose or replace decisions. We’ll discuss how Texas Children’s Hospital and Haskell have developed processes to effectively utilize existing space to be more effective and efficient in delivering care to meet both patient and clinician needs.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the market forces that are driving space use considerations and how to account for them in your strategic planning.

2. Assess the viability of moving outpatient programs to other facilities including medical office buildings (MOB).

3. Determine performance requirements of a MOB based on the complexity of care and acuity of patients.

4. Analyze factors such as future flexibility, changing market demographics, government regulations and clinician needs to perfect organizational space plans.
